Should Online Gambling Be Illegal?

Online gambling is one of the most popular forms of entertainment played on the internet. It has many forms and variations. It varies from online poker, online casinos to online racebooks, online sportsbooks, online bingo and online lotteries, etc.
According to the Federal law of America, online gambling is clearly illegal. However, this law does not cover all the aspects of gambling and there are many loopholes in this law. A company cannot operate an online gambling website from within America. However, the law does not prohibit players from playing online.
There are many aspects related to the legitimacy of online gambling. First of all, since the law does not cover this issue with full impact, around 70% of the players are from America. So even though we have a law, it is not a law since it does not explicitly prohibit online gambling anywhere. The first argument definitely is this legal status. Since people are going to play it online why not make it a legal industry and benefit the people as well as the state.
The state is going to regularize this industry and get taxation advantage. On the other hand, there will be less frauds and scams because proper mechanisms will be established. The information technology industry on the other hand, is also going to benefit from this turnaround as new jobs and businesses will be created inside the United States.
Online gambling might be popular like anything but still there are many dark sides to it. First of all gambling is prohibited by law of United States. All of the websites are operated from offshore basis. People can only play online. Now only this playing has serious consequences. First of all, the frequency and aggressiveness of online gamblers is far more than the regular casino gamblers. They sit online for hours on stretch and are usually unaware of how much money they have lost. There have been cases when online gamblers had lost a fortune or were badly engrossed in debt.
While playing online, there are no breaks as in real gambling. If you run out of cash, you need to leave, even if it is specifically for getting cash out of an ATM. This cools off the player and he might decide better than going back to play. On the other hand, since there is no cooling off period and paying through credit cards has no limits on cash, players never take time off, which is excessively dangerous. Secondly there are many scams related to online gambling. Players have been ripped off their hard earned money because of unauthentic gambling websites.
All in all, online gambling can turn into a global industry. But first there needs to be laws for its regulation. With proper laws intact it can benefit the players as well as the industry. On the other hand, with the current state of affairs, the game might be very popular but it will still have adverse consequences for the state as well as the players.
